On My Sewing Machine

My hubby bought me a Singer sewing machine for Christmas and I've been putting it to good use over the last couple days. I don't really know how to sew. No one ever taught me. My mom showed me a few things in college and my husband's grandmother taught me some quilting, but I've mostly just picked things up on my own, especially when it comes to using a sewing machine. I'm really loving it!

But over the course of this past week, I have made 8 pouch slings for various friends (and one for myself, of course). The slings look way cuter with a baby inside, but this is the best I could do since my babies are sleeping.

I found the material for 75 cents a meter at my favorite open air market for cloth in my city. I find it a bit humorous that pouch slings sell for $40 or more in the U.S. but I made each one for around $2! That's huge savings! Thanks to my friend Tiffany for giving me my very first pouch sling last summer. I'm addicted now, and so are my girls. They cry and argue about who gets to ride in the sling (well, my 3 year old does the arguing but my 14 month old can throw her little fits too!).

I also attempted to make a pair of reversible cloth baby shoes. I'm still trying to get the last slip stitch figured out, but I'm hopeful.

And my final project for the week was a car organizer. It was a wonderful thing to have activities stored in little compartments when I decided to put the car seats back into the car so I would not have the girls arguing over who could sit in my lap anymore. Our first trip in the car with car seats installed in about a year was executed with absolutely no crying! Hooray! (Note: In the country where I live people don't normally use car seats and don't usually even know what one is. And we don't normally travel any faster than 20 mph in the car.)

I found all of the tutorials for these projects online, passed along by friends or found via Google searches. Here are the links:

yay! How fun! Those slings look good! You did a good job! Awesome! I have a SouthAsian Hand-crank 500 lb. Sewing machine - it's a pain to use! I have to oil it constantly!

So, how do you put Shanti in the sling? I'm a complete newbie at sling wearing...we stroller everywhere, because that's the kind of town we live in and I didn't even THINK of it with Judah (I have no idea why, out of the loop, I guess) But I'd love to start using it when I would otherwise carry Judah now (he's a small 1 yr old--19lbs or so). You'll have to write me and explain if he'd just sit in it with his legs out, or what...no one around here uses slings, I have no idea why...small town, nothing ever changes, etc. Does the one size sling work for both of your girls even though they are different sizes?
Thanks girl...your blog is fun fun to read!! Now if I can only figure out why I can get the sewing machine to work for me...I am out of my element for sure!!

So I tried leaving a comment earlier...but something went wrong, and it may just be delayed so you may get two from me :) I just wanted to ask quickly, how you carry Shanti in your sling...I want to carry Judah, but his little legs aren't gonna go inside the pouch, can they dangle...I'm a novice, advise me please :) Thanks Shan
