On My Husband's Motorcycle

My husband is a very innovative man. He has a dream and he wants to see it become reality.  His most recent venture - converting a 1965 Royal Enfield G2 350 that has been refitted with a diesel engine to run on vegetable oil (well, half vegetable oil and half diesel...for now anyway; eventually it will be 2/3 veg oil and 1/3 diesel)!

This is true, made-from-scratch bio-diesel, y'all. This thing gets 150 miles to the gallon running on the bio-diesel. Talk about getting more bang for your buck! Here's a picture of how he has the vegetable oil rigged to go through a filter (and he just adds a bit of diesel once the vegetable oil is in the gas tank):

As he pulled up the driveway yesterday, I thought to myself, "Hmmm...smells like french fries!"

  1. haha! That's awesome :) My sister lives in California and a lot of her friends have bio-diesel cars... except in a car, you always come out smelling like french fries :) haha!
That's cool! I didn't know you could rig it up yourself to do that - cool!

  2. So where do you get your oil? Do you just use your old oil? Buy new oil? get it from McDonald's? My sister's friends get theirs from fast food joints :)

  3. This week is the first time Lee has been able to try the bio-diesel out. He actually only used half old oil. The other half of the oil was new because we didn't have that much used oil.

He has inquired with both McDonald's that we have in town if he could have their used oil. Unfortunately, McDonald's corporately has an agreement to pay a local company to carry away the used oil. :( But they recommended we check with some of the smaller, local restaurants. We'll be checking into that soon. :)

  4. Great job!

I got to your blog through Lowell. I am in MN and I have heard of a guy in northern MN that converted his diesel SUV to cooking oil powered with some kind of conversion kit. He gets his oil from the French Fry Stands at the MN State Fair. I think he only uses diesel fuel to get his vehicle started - then it runs on the oil.

Amazing! And way to be green!

  5. That's so awesome, we smell like french fries quite a bit too but unfortunately it's not because we have a bio-diesel motorcycle! way to go :-)

  6. un-unhhh! That is totally cool!

  7. Wow! That's amazing! What a smart man! And LOL about the french fries. But hey, maybe McDonalds will get in on the game and in the future you can order a happy meal AND fill up in the same place?! ;)
